The closet opens, let’s see – pants, shirts, shoes and accessories. If you are like me, you have way to many shoes and a bag of mystery clothes that are either to loose or to tight. And then there are some reliable staples that fit perfect no matter what the weather. You slip them on and get away with wearing dark jeans to the office, what a slice of heaven. But some days you want to wear the suit or the high heels, some days you just want to change clothes.
We have been wearing the same attire for to long a time, it is now a period to switch out those slacks for corduroys or maybe those boots for heels. At times we blend into the background, we do what everyone else does and we even use the same slang. We want different results but we aren’t doing anything different, what is wrong with this picture? When you stick out you are either praised for ostracized for it, so you play it safe and continue to blend – you put away that red dress. Don’t, plan to step out in the sharp suit, speak up at the meeting, schedule coffee with the executive director and step out of that comfort zone.
Fear drives the inclination to retreat but truly there is very little to be afraid of, most times it is the insecurity in our own attributes that make us believe that we are not capable of taking on a challenge. If you have prepared, trained, educated yourself and studied your prospect the only thing left to do is to go. Allow yourself the opportunity to shine, stand out for qualities that your possess because they afford you to season this challenge with only a flavor you can provide. No more drab khakis for you!
Build on your skills, I know you have some talents in there (I can’t whistle, but I can scream) and believe in yourself. You have many goals to accomplish, your path has yet begun and you are going to need to push yourself many times over. Surround yourself with supporters of you and those that bring you positive energy, “team you” will help you in the fitting room and tell you which new clothes make you shine. Your true devotees will not allow you to walk out looking frumpy or with ill fitting clothes, metaphorically speaking. They will make sure you have that speech prepared, they will help you network to a better opportunity and late at night they will pray for your path. All the best on your brave new endeavor, Big Hug!
